Amid the rise of Black, White, and Yellow fungus cases, a new and possibly first case of “Green Fungus” is reported in the country. This “Green Fungus”, scientifically known as Aspergillosis, is an uncommon fungal infection that affects the lungs.

As per the reports, a 34-year-old man from Indore, Madhya Pradesh was admitted to Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) hospital a couple of months ago after being infected with the COVID-19 but he recovered well and was discharged in a month. 10-15 days after the discharge, victim complained of nosebleeds, high fever, and severe weakness. After examining his symptoms, doctors suspected that he may have mucormycosis (Black Fungus Infection) and was tested to confirm the same.

After the tests, it was found out that he has Green Fungus in his lungs, sinuses, and blood. After concluding that 90 percent of his lungs are infected with Green Fungus, he is being treated in Indore but was not responding well to the treatment. So he was immediately airlifted to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai for better treatment.

Symptoms:

Dr. Ravi Dosi, the head of the Department of Chest Diseases at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences, who closely examined the patient first detected with Green Fungus infection explained that the symptoms for the Green Fungus as known for now include nose bleeding and high fever.

As per the primary information available, this fungus can cause severe weight loss and weakness. All the symptoms known as of now are explained from the research and were also seen in the first patient infected. The rumor has also been making rounds that Amphotericin B may not be effective in treating the Green Fungus infected patients but isn’t confirmed yet, but if found true, the cure will be a matter of concern now.

It is yet to be known if the fungus infection differs for recovered COVID-19 patients to other patients. According to Dr. Dosi, deep research is being conducted to know more about the fungus and how it differs from the other viruses, more causes, symptoms, and ways to cure it and he expects to share more information about the same soon.
