A Crunchstories wrap of the Emmy’s 2021

Emmy

As we reach an accelerating peak of outstanding television productions this year, let us take a moment to appreciate a few of them who shone at the Emmy’s the day before. The wins were dominated by the hit English-drama series The Crown, with the comedy genre crowded with accolades for Ted Lasso.

The Emmy awards are an annual commemoration of achievements in the television industry. It is held as the top honor, along the likes of the Oscars and Grammy. The Emmys are given out as either Primetime Emmy Awards or daytime Emmy Awards, and are to honor any and every outstanding contribution to television, and has now included sports and news broadcasting entertaining as well.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy awards were presented on the 19th of September, in Los Angeles, California and hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.

The big winners of the night for Outstanding drama series and comedy series were The Crown and Ted Lasso, respectively. With Josh O’ Connor and Olivia Coleman winning for their lead acting roles under drama, we had Jason Sudeikis winning for his Ted Lasso portrayal and Jean Smart for his role in Hacks. Apart from that, Kate Winslet made a comeback winning best actress in a lead role for a limited series, Mare of Easttown. The Queens Gambit, which made waves last year through its Netflix release, also won the best Limited series award.

The awards saw a more inclusive nomination but still was dominated primarily by straight white men. There are definitely strides taken by the academy, with “Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man” winning best original short form show, Keke Palmer for her role in “Turnt Up With The Taylors” and Michaela Coel for writing “I May Destroy You”. There was still a major absenteeism from the Arabic and Asian communities, but changing times can show otherwise.

The show was a bit politicized, with many of Cedric’s jokes going right above everyone’s head for the same reason. At one point, people were more scared that confused whether to laugh, and this led to a certain dull at particular moments.

Bottom line is that the Emmys show us how every member of a now less-viewed form of entertainment. With the outburst of streaming platforms in the scene, and how quickly they have been included in as part of TV performance is commendable. The pandemic seems to have affected the conventional TV producers, and many seek refuge in the solace of stages such as Netflix and Disney+ because of the market. Let’s hope for a better outcome for the traditional and for more of these award-winning shows to be hosted on online platforms!
