Vicissitude – don’t resist; let it persist

Change

Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change – Confucius

Change is the only constant in life. And I don’t think resisting it is a wise option. This is something the year 2020 has taught us, with a lot of bizarre stuff.

Whether like it or not, all of us are slaved to exhibit confirmation bias. That is we consciously or unconsciously like the company of people who agree with our ideologies and beliefs.

We make numerous decisions: personal, professional and economical. Whilst making decisions, other opinions seem to have a profound influence on our thinking. Studies and researches have shown that with changing time and circumstances, the human brain has evolved to fail at receiving opposing views.

And that is why we don’t like change; we have programmed what is supportive and what is contrasting without fully exploring the opportunities.

Well the first step to change in life, society or anything for the matter; you have to accept that there are issues, flaws and they have to be addressed.

Every change is preceded by chaos. You cannot expect a silent wave of transition. The definition of change takes many forms depending on the manner of infliction. One’s reaction to change is also highly variable. It could be a tone of acceptance, conviction or compulsion.

Silence causes an urge to talk and similarly change causes the urge to grow. There was a major part of the population who were overwhelmed with this lockdown; though not the ideal mode of change, it was a much-needed break from the monotonous lifestyle.

It exposed people to new dimensions of life, other than just work, movie and party.

Talking of change, I have heard many of my friends saying we don’t have the motivation to accept or adapt to changes. So let’s introspect on that. What is motivation? Reading biographies of successful people, watching inspirational documentaries, or listening to Ted Talks? You ask me, it isn’t worth it. Every biography has a fixed storyline.

Our hero is born in modest circumstances and by virtue of his own grit and talent fights his way to greatness. Isn’t that something we know very well? We have our own set of strengths and challenges to face, it depends on our decision, whether to fight or avoid them.

Reading or listening to them, you’d want your life also to function in the same way.

Change is not always something big widespread or involving huge numbers. It can be a change in opinion, though, plan of execution, or even in lifestyle.  The main reason for resisting change is we are accustomed to routine and procedure.

We want to follow a methodical strategy, where someone has already laid the road for us. We don’t want to be pioneers in witnessing or producing change.

Why?

1)      If it’s all-new, we should experiment on how to approach the change and we know it has its pros and cons which can be overwhelming and stressful.

2)      We don’t trust the result or outcome that the change will lead to.

3)      Most importantly, we don’t practice what we preach. It is easy to tell the other person to go with the flow but hard to follow when we encounter disruptions in the flow. So focus on what is in store for you. Embrace every natural change that comes by your way. Let reality shape your mentality.
