In the recent G7 (Group of Seven) summit United States President Joseph Biden and Russian president Vladimir Putin met face to face for the first time at villa la grange in Geneva, Switzerland. Both the presidents had their translators and wrapped the meeting more quickly than expected. The US president described both the countries as “two great powers”.
Both of them expected the meeting to last for four to five hours in two parts, but it took less than three hours together without a second part. Expected to end the long drawn cold war between the two nations so that they can find “stability and predictability”. But the meeting did not end well as Putin denied any involvement over cyber attacks, human rights abuses and refused to say the name of Alexei Navalny.
Navalny was a Russian opposition leader, political activist and lawyer. He is the leader of the Russia of the Future party and the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) who struggled to bring out corruption in Russia against president Vladimir Putin and his government. However, he was arrested for violating the parole of a 2014 sentence when he accused President Putin and his allies for stealing billions. Thousands were arrested when they are organising protests after knowing about the arrest of Navalny.
Osama bin Laden’s niece and a supporter of Donald Trump, Noor Bin Laden stated, “Biden is a weak figure. This overseas trip made it more clear on world stage that he is a frail man and somebody is running affairs behind the scenes.”
At a press conference followed by the summit, a CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins asked Biden why he is so confident that Putin will change his behaviour. Biden responded, “I’m not confident he’ll change his behaviour. Where the hell — what do you do all the time? When did I say I was confident?”
However Biden stated that he owes his last question an apology to the reporters before boarding the Air force One at the Geneva airport. Both the countries have described the meeting as a fruitful discussion and Biden at a press conference said that his agenda is not against Russia or anyone else but for the American people and the last thing Putin wants now is a cold war.
