Congratulations to all the gamer fans because Free Guy is up for streaming. After a yearlong delay, Free Guy directed by Stranger Things director Shawn Levy, featuring our all-time favourite Deadpool hero Ryan Reynolds and ever charming Jodie Comer, has come out. With an extraordinary story of stirring up the worlds of reality- and video-gaming, the movie had created its place in the hearts of billions long before its release. Now after a delay because of covid-19, the movie has come out, and so we love it.
Let’s talk about the plot. We are introduced to a world-famous video game called Free City created by Soonami Games, which is supposable stolen from a game called Free Life developed by Walter “Keys” McKey, played by Joe Keery and Jodie Comer as Millie Rusk. In search of proof, Jodie plays the game as Molotov Girl to find evidence against Soonami’s head developer, Antwan.
Henceforth, we get to meet our main character named Guy, who is an NPC (non-player character) player, who falls in love with Molotov Girl. In order to meet his love, Free Guy takes away a pair of sunglasses from a player avatar that lets him see his world through the eyes of a player and starts playing it. Because of Guys’ excellent development in the game, Millie asked for Guy’s help to find the required code. Meanwhile, Guy becomes sensational throughout the world because of his performance. His popularity threatened the launch of Free City 2, Antwan orders Keys and his new partner Mouser to reboot Guy’s programming.
After overcoming all the difficulties, Ryan Reynolds’ character Guy and Jodie Comer find out the proof they were looking for, with the help of keys. At last, Antwan gives back Free City to Millie and they start their new game with all the initial NPC players, which is remarkably successful.
Although we had such plots regarding video games before, like Jumanji (2017 and 2019), Free Guy brings a new idea by keeping a keen link between the real world and the video game world. Like most of the movies, the writers focus on real-life characters rather than the game’s player. In Free Guy, the writers bring out a fresh perspective by concentrating on the character development of the NPC players more scrupulously and mainly Guy’s hardship with his existential crisis, although he is not a human with a real conscience, which was a fresh concept and is loved by all.
In terms of performance, the cast was on fire. We loved Jodie Comer’s double role as an excellent game developer and the strong, sexy gamer girl inside the game. Her chemistry with both the heroes was outstanding. I don’t think we need to say anything more about Ryan Reynolds, as usual, goofy and lovable. Also, Stranger Things star, Joe Keery did an excellent job too as well as all the characters.
With outstanding animation and script writing, this movie has already crossed $60 million dollars in box office world-wide. And why not, this movie has something for everyone. With clever concept, sweet, self-aware humour, and a charming cast, this movie has exceeded all our expectations. So don’t wait and start watching.
