To date, India has vaccinated more than 75 million people out of which 68 million doses were of Covishield produced by Serum Institute of India. The health ministry of India has reported blood clots (Thromboembolic) events in just 0.61 doses per million doses of Covishield which is considered as a minute number.

If we dive into actual numbers, then 700 cases were reported till now out of which, In-depth reviews have been conducted for 498 cases.  And it gave out the data of 26 cases which turned out to be the true and exact evidence of thromboembolic.

To appraise, Thromboembolism, in simple words, is a medical condition in which a blood clot formed in one vessel ( or usually in the heart) breaks off and travels through the bloodstreams to another blood vessel to clog it and cause organ damage.

It is suspected that the blood clot symptoms may occur within 20 days of the post-vaccination period. There were no thromboembolic events recorded in people who administered Covaxin. But you should chin up, as the ministry has also reported that south Asians are 70% less likely to be affected with these symptoms than the western descents.

However, the Ministry has released an advisory to all the healthcare workers and vaccine beneficiaries to make them aware of the symptoms of Thromboembolism and if anyone discovers the listed symptoms must report to the health facilities where they have procured the vaccine.

The list of symptoms mentioned in the Health & Family Welfare Ministry’s advisory:

  1. Breathlessness.
  2. Pain in the chest.
  3. Pain in limbs/pain on pressing limbs or swelling in limbs (arm or calf).
  4. Multiple, pinhead size red spots or bruising of skin in an area beyond the injection site.
  5. Persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting.
  6. Seizures in the absence of the previous history of seizures with or without vomiting.
  7. Severe and persistent headache with or without vomiting (in the absence of the previous history of migraine or chronic headache).
  8. Weakness/paralysis of limbs or any particular side or part of the body (including face); ted blood clots.
