The protégé (2021) – A story where the student becomes the Master

The Protege

Maggie Q is back in action. Yes, people, our favourite, the badass Margaret Denise Quigley, is back with her action- thriller film The Protégé. The movie is directed by Martin Campbell, starring Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson alongside Maggie. This film has raised a lot of eyebrows and this is what we think about it.

“The Protégé”, which translates to someone who is guided by an older or influential person, is the main protagonist of the story. Anna, who is played by Margaret Denise Quigley, is an assassin who is raised by Moody a.k.a, our favourite Samuel J. Jackson. She was discovered by Moody at the massacre of Saigon where Anna’s whole family was killed. After avenging her family with Moody, she travelled across the globe to complete high profile assassinations. She settled in England and opened a bookstore where she met Rembrandt, our second main lead, for the first time.

Skip forward a bit and we see Anna and moody on a new operation. Their operation is a success, but Moody is slaughtered. She thinks Edward, who was their last target, was involved in killing Moody. And henceforth, the whole movie is Anna finding why Moody was killed and avenge his death.

As far as the plot goes, there’s nothing new. The protagonist loses her teacher and now she is on a mission following all the breadcrumbs. The writers failed spectacularly. With an A- list cast, we can’t imagine the tremendous things they could have done. There were no twists, no climax except for one where the very supposedly dead Moody comes back to life to save his protégé. The writers left no shocking ending for the finale and it was just blah. The movie’s promotion was a tragedy. We don’t know about you guys, but we have barely known any poster or trailer about this movie. It was nowhere to be found, and suddenly there it was.

The mere element which made the movie watchable was the exchange between Maggie Q and Michael Keaton. The seductive, playful on-screen chemistry between them was impressive, and it just drives you to wish to watch them together in some new films.

We can evidently declare, this two’s sexual tension pulled the whole movie together. All the cast did a tremendous joy simultaneously. Margaret Denise Quigley was impeccable, just like any of her other action movies, and Michael Keaton too was impressive. Our only regret was not getting Samuel L. Jackson for better screen time.

As an action thriller, the protégé was a mediocre movie which will unquestionably be forgotten right after you finish watching it. Although I can proudly say this movie did one good thing. And that is it made us remember how good Maggie Q’s action-thriller series Nikita (2010-2013) was and how much we miss it.

We don’t know about you, but we are absolutely going to stream it after this.
