The White Lotus – booking a room for murder

The white lotus

The White Lotus is a dramedy satire television show, airing on HBO max and Disney+. It revolves around the hosts and guests of the White Lotus resort on an island in Hawaii.

The episodes are centered on a week spent by the guests at the retreat and the drama filled tension that follows. The show stars Murray Bartlett, Alexandra Daddario, Jennifer Coolidge, Jake Lacy and Sydney Sweeney, among many other stars and is directed by Mike White.

The White Lotus is an expensive and immersive resort experience on an island of Hawaii. The manager of the White Lotus is Armond, a recovering addict, who assists the guests to their rooms and day-to-day activities. The main characters are 3 groups of guests; the newly married couple Shane and Rachel Patton who are on their honeymoon, the long-married couple Nichole and Mark Mossbacher with their two kids Olivia and Quinn along with Olivia’s friend from college, Paula, and finally Tanya McQuoid, a rich older woman who is vacationing alone to spread her late mother’s ashes.

The show begins with a disgruntled and heartbroken Shane Patton sitting alone in the airport and a couple asking him about his vacation, only to reveal that a murder had taken place at the White Lotus, unraveling a string of mystery in the episodes to come.

Right from the beginning, the ambience of the movie is very festive and dark, including the introductory theme, the background music and the plot line. It has some very well-developed individual plot lines that add to the drama and intrigue of the show.

The cinematography is very appeasing, soft and light, giving a very Hawaiian vibe to the show. The director vividly explores the feelings, emotions and backstories of each of the 9 characters of the show, with some very vivid scenes of drug use and nudity [viewer discretion is advised]. It was really amazing to see how well the use of nature and modernity fused together in the show, with a very free flowing train of thought and not much complication.

Why you should watch the White Lotus?

It has one of the best musical experiences in the show, presenting the story out in the open with a good mixture of symbolism and realistic scenes. There are scenes of drug abuse and sex, but the story will leave you guessing who had died.

The show has been made with the aim of getting the audience to develop personal connections to the characters, and achieves in that.
