Today we are going to talk about You. One of the most iconic and chilling shows on Netflix, You. The show portrayed great potential with the first two seasons. So, it was a matter of time till we got the next season and here we are. Netflix is back with its third season this Friday and we can’t get enough of it.
Brace yourself if you think you have seen enough. The third season has to be the most horrifying and craziest out of all of them. Season 2 gave us a mind-blowing ending by showing Love pregnant with Joe’s child. Joe, who wanted to give his child a healthy normal childhood, decided not to kill Love and instead play along the game of a happy family. In season 3, we see Joe and Love get married and move to a new city to start with their new life. But it’s Joe and Love we are talking about. How normal can they be? And the bigger question, how long before they snap and go back to their old ways.
The trailer itself was made cleverly. In the small 2-and-a-half-minute window, we get a very clear idea of what to expect from the show this season. The information given in the trailer was the right amount to raise our excitement and eagerness to watch the show. But not enough to set you on a wrong path or give you the whole story of the show. The cut clips gave us a slightest taste of craziness that left us wanting more.
Let’s talk about the plot of the season. Both Joe and Love are living their lives as new parents of a lovely baby boy. But soon Joe goes back to his old ways. For him, as if he has finally found the “You” in his story. The girl he has been searching for all along might be his next-door neighbour. And knowing Joe, he can literally do anything for love. As usual, just like the last two seasons, we watch them entangle and play their mind games.
Kudos to the writers for not bringing anything from their past lives and keeping it fresh for us. It was petrifying watching the two serial killers in the most sacred role of parenting. Especially when they were not exactly getting along well. For old fans of the show, that must be a ticking time bomb.
Hats off for the performance from both Penn Badgley, playing the role of Joe and Victoria Pedretti, playing Love in the series. The character development of Joe was especially heart touching. He had some major realizations this season. The best one has to be when he realised why he was left by his mother in his childhood. We see him leaving his child on the doorstep of another couple because he thinks he is not healthy for his child and that’s not what the baby needs. Of course, we all know how that turned out to be for Joe himself.
There are a lot of new characters introduced in this season. These new faces mostly added to the dark humour in the series. Instead of serious and eerie throughout for the past 2 seasons, this time the writers actually tried to balance it with some humour. There were some serious moments as well. As this is the first time, we watch Joe being in a potential relationship which can be healthy for him and his partner. But we have to say, the death of a main character was a shock to us.
The season ends with Joe in a new city, Paris, and it seems like he is in search of his recent obsession. It’s not really clear if he will ever come back to take his son or not. But we are right to expect season 4 coming out real soon, or in the own words of Netflix, “You season 4 is in the [body] bag”.
