Halloween. That one day of the year we celebrate all kinds of horror and fears. But everything still seems happy and joyful, with the age-old traditions of costumes, trick or treats and leftovers the next day. But what if all joy ceases to exist with one occurrence and your worst nightmares come alive.
We are here with a perfect movie for you to binge watch this Halloween weekend. Halloween kills is a direct sequel of the 2018’s horror movie Halloween and the twelfth movie of the Halloween franchise. For people who do not know about this franchise, let us brief a bit. Halloween portrays the horrors created by one significant serial killer named Michael Myers. It all started in 1963 with Myers killing his teenage sister at a very young age. Halloween Kills doesn’t really have much relations with the movies before in the franchise. So don’t get spooked if you haven’t watched the previous movies yet.
Halloween Kills starts from where it left off back in 2018. We see a very wounded Laurie with her daughter and granddaughter in an ambulance after trapping Michael in the house by burning it. The firefighters rushed to the scene to rescue him. And Michel repays them generously for helping him. Yes, by killing each one of them on the spot. Once again, we see Michael winning death without a scratch just like all the times before.
On the other side, we see Tommy Doyle, Marion Chambers, Lindsey Wallace, and Lonnie Elam, all survivors of Michael Myers from past movies. They all gathered in the bar on the night of Halloween, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Michael’s imprisonment. This was a nice occurrence showing all the past survivors and how they turned up to be. Many say this shows that the Halloween franchise is soon ended. And this movie is working as a closure for all the main characters of the show.
If you follow the movies for some time, you notice the writers focus on Michael and his killing spree. Not enough emotions are put in. But that is very different with the recent movie. Apart from all the violence, the movie focuses deeply on the emotions of people of Haddonfield. At first, they are shown celebrating at the bar, a celebration of victory. All the people who have never seen Myers also came forward and rejoiced.
In the later part of the movie, people were shown afraid of their lives. The fear in their eyes and desperation in their voices were depicted brilliantly in the movie. How a single fear can destroy thousands of lives. Also, how this fear changes your character. The fear of Myers changed good, simple, sensible people into fighters and murderers who would kill. A doctor who saves millions of lives with his hands is now holding a gun with those same hands to kill someone. People who have only heard stories were also scared to death just by the idea of one person. They got us so attached to the movie and their characters that you actually feel the need to see the other movies just to see what their characters were all about and their backstories.
Don’t worry, it’s not scary all the time. Director David Gordon Green also has put in lots of comic relief and dark humour in between, just to ease the viewers. It was a good balance as the humour didn’t suppress the stress and the fear of the original plot, but added something extra to it.
The cast was phenomenal. Everyone did an outstanding job and the director really brought all their emotions on the screen. The sets were also really well made. Even if a lot of time has passed since the last movie, you can clearly see the resemblance with the other movies of the franchise.
The movie ended in a rather weird place, making us believe the third part of the trilogy is coming soon. There are rumors of the next movie “Halloween Ends” to be scheduled to be released in 2022. Whenever it’s coming, we expect it will be as good as the other movies and a great ending to the series. But until then, let’s enjoy Halloween Kills for this Halloween.
