November 26 is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day in many countries and here we go, one week of complete prominence to thanksgiving and gratitude with articles, quotes, and messages. Our lifestyle or implementation is quite contrary to the actual concept of gratitude.
Appreciation should be heartfelt, acknowledged and reverted on a daily basis. You have to be thankful for keeping up good health during this tough time; thankful for eating 3 times a day; thankful for everything that you have.
This does not imply to not have desires or luxury. It just implies to be content with what you have and don’t sulk for something more, always.
Every prominent day like women’s day, earth day, father’s day it a depiction of gratitude towards them for their selfless existence.
So every day is a day of gratitude. Then why celebrate it separately? Maybe, because with the life getting more mechanical, we are forgetting to be thankful. Isn’t it?
Happiness is the only metric for gratitude. Though it is a part of positive psychology and has theories of how to stay happy and extend gratitude, you really don’t require a counsellor for this.
Now this lockdown period must have given all possible answers to your lost and found questions and reasons for not staying happy. Little experiences from life can teach a lot.
Most of us are well off in terms of social status and still if you don’t know, why you should be happy; I recommend you to go visit orphan homes, old age homes and slum areas.
The gratitude bulb will just radiant off you. I am really sorry for bringing out the class differentiation, but when the society is constructed this way, it’s best to bring such relevance for a broader perspective. Notice the goodness in life.
Once in a while ear-splits are necessary for epiphany.
Gratitude isn’t just a statement of thank you. Thank you is just the initiation of gratitude. It has an inconspicuous effect on your well being.
- Gratitude reduces stress. It curbs the use of negative words and diverts from resentment and envy to resilience and empathy.
- Gratitude intervention was found helpful in reducing cynicism and narcissism thoughts.
You must be wondering why the positive effects of gratitude are being laid out. We live in an era, where every work done or action taken is decided upon its beneficial use to the person doing it. What do we get out of it?
So such people who think what do we get from experiencing and extending gratitude. Now you know it. If not for others, at least it can be considered for your own well being.
Gratitude provides context for any reflex associated with optimism. It cannot be defined to be a trait or a quality. It is rather a state where one can thrive. I know this sounds quite like a babaji pravachan, but there is logic and reasoning.
It isn’t a challenge; it is a choice to be made.
You should make sure that your feeling of gratitude is expressed. It could be through anything. But make sure you express it. Unexpressed gratitude is like wrapping a present but not giving it. No matter how beautiful the wrapper might be, it won’t be valued.
Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance. So start your day with a positive thought. I am not encouraging you to spam your whatsapp groups with positive good morning messages ;-).
Just make sure you are clear of pessimistic thought and approach. It is okay to stay neutral and non-appreciative to an extent, but never criticise.
Be thankful and appreciative of people, things and circumstances in your life.
