Cyclone was given the name Tauktae and it’s said that it’s the most destructive Cyclone to ever hit the Indian West Coast (Though there was a huge loss of $800 million last year due to Nisarga Cyclone). The estimates are yet to come but surely the loss has been much worse this time.

Cyclone Tauktae, has till now killed at least 40 people since the landfall started in the Western Gujarat. Before striking The state of Gujarat, the cyclone was formed at the Arabian sea and passed ahead with spreading destruction in the city of Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra. The winds were so strong followed by a very heavy rain that resulted in a flood like situation in many coastal regions.

On May 18 Indian navy performed an airlift helping the workers from a barge in the Arabian Sea. Military, air force and navy are now focused on rescuing all the folks on the oil rigs which came on the way of the cyclone.

On Monday, a barge, operated by the Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) the largest Oil corporation in the country which had a crew of 261 people when it started sinking in an offshore oilfield because of the force of the cyclone. The Indian navy rescued 186 of these crew members, and was searching for the remaining 75 on the Wednesday morning.

“We have five ships in the area and two are coming back with the rescued personnel and remaining three are staying for search and rescue,” Said a Navy Spokesperson.

One more barge named the Gal Constructor, sank in the west coast of Mumbai on Monday. It had 137 crew members. The navy arranged a helicopter and some immediate vessels to rescue everyone on board. The Cyclone recorded the highest wind speed of around 125mph. According to the Indian meteorological department the cyclone will weaken as it moves ahead to the state of Rajasthan.
