Suddenly, after the pandemic, COVID-19 hit the globe, we humans started taking a little more care of our physical health.  Most of us have been seeing celebrities, influencers, and people from different industries practicing YOGA.

Looking at them, I am sure you too must have felt, to begin with, the baby steps on your yoga mat. Isn’t it?

Do you know the origin of this meditative exercise and how people started practicing it? Let’s go back in time to understand this.

Yoga concentrates on subtle science that focuses on achieving peace and harmony between an individual’s body, mind, and soul. The word Yoga first appeared in the oldest sacred texts, i.e the Rig Veda. The meaning of Yoga is ” join or unite “, which is understood with its Sanskrit root named “Yuj”.

It was during the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago when the practicing of yogism all began.

This Hindu Exercise was spread across in the 3rd Century BCE, the word “yoga” became common in other religions like Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist writings. In the 5th century, this was meant for meditation and religious use, but not as a form of workout. At around the same time, the concept became even more established among the Jains, Buddhists, and Hindus.

This meditative practice later on became widely recognized because of the Indian nationalist movement, as this was one of their way of building up pride and cultural identity.

Surprisingly, the practice of this was widely promoted by powerful families, institutions, and activities until India attained its independence in 1947.

This is the little history behind the emergence of Yoga.
