Rape of males or men has been sexually harassed. Not the news you hear on a daily basis. Why doesn’t society normalize rape now? Anyway the number of women being raped is increasing at a swift rate day by day then what about men.
Maybe it is because of the strong masculine custom prevalent in the society which might judge the men about their sexual orientation if they complained or spoke about being raped. The rape of males is generally seen as a taboo in society and rape, in general, is defined as the crime committed by men against women.
A survey which was conducted on the male population in India resulted that every one out of 5 males has been molested or raped at some point in their lives and the offenders were women.
Another survey by GoNews over a particular section of the male population showed that most of the time the abuser is from the victim’s immediate family or circle and after being experienced all of this they never spoke it out to anyone they know nor complained.
Most of the reasons included them not being aware and feeling embarrassed to share or discomfort in sharing.
The long-term effects of rape of males include loss of control and confidence over his manhood, fear of becoming a homosexual or gay, sexual problems, and many more which includes the pressure to prove one’s manhood which may also lead to suicide.
The suicide rate of sexually abused males is 14 to 15 times higher than normal males. At this point in time, males need psychological healing and extensive emotional support after being raped or molested. Most of the time they do not speak out about it due to various reasons as mentioned above.
In India, there is no law or clause for the rape of males, and rape of males in India is commonly underreported. Because of the non-availability of gender-neutral rape laws, most of the time if the cases related to male rapes go noticed and if noticed are closed off by minimalistic punishments.
It was also witnessed that most of the feminists were also against gender-neutral rape laws.
The criminal laws have been revised every year repeatedly by considering the crimes that happened in the previous years and the current year for the betterment so that the victims can reach out and appeal.
But it’s high time now and it is not the right way to only project what women in society go through by leaving the problems faced by men unnoticed cause males are vulnerable too.
