Sex Education

sex education

Among all the taboo topics, sex education takes the first place. Undoubtedly, you can say it with 100% confidence; Indian schools and education system do not endorse sex education (computer ji lock kar dijiye).

There is a lot of ‘hush-hush’ around this topic and if somebody talks about it for awareness, good lord, galli ke sab aunties’ aur uncles’ nikal padte (facts, you see).

I am not gonna talk about offenders or people with deviant mindsets w.r.t. this aspect. It’s useless to just keep talking, we need to prevent such atrocities rather than thinking of remedies after the occurrence.

If sex education is taught in schools:

  1. Sexual abuse victims would come forward and report the perpetrators.
  2. Increased awareness about sex.
  3. Acceptance of non – traditional marriage choices.
  4. Menstruation would no longer be considered ‘impure’.
  5. Students would learn how to monitor and control their urges.
  6. Gender appearance choices wouldn’t be looked down.
  7. More people would recognize and get reproductive and sexual diseases treated.
  8. Careers won’t be gender-specific.
  9. Masturbation would be normalized.

There has to be a new pedagogy that challenges the conventional hetero-sexual understanding and acceptance. We should try looking beyond the envelope of social stigma.

Promoting sex education is not promoting pornography. The lens you look through, matters. Children have to know the right thing at the right time. It is because they don’t get answers to their questions and resort to means of pornography and misunderstand the reality of life.

Sexual urges are common and part of human make-up. Everybody is bound to experience them on personal decisions at some point in life. But the right time is what matters. One has to know how to channel them and just not be left clueless.

You can do anything and everything in life, nobody will stop you. But there are some pillars called ethics, morals and discipline that are foundation to your life. Without proper education about it, I don’t think we can establish a difference between right and wrong.

It isn’t just about sexual intercourse, it also contributes to gender studies and the right thought process. Below is a link to a video, where the interviewer approaches random men in his society and has a simple question for them.

For people who haven’t watched the video, I will summarise it.

It basically depicts the irrational opinion of people in the society. They are narrowed to a particular type of lifestyle and believe that is the right way. But no. It is just that they have taken a particular gender for granted and termed them inferior. Why do you think so?

Do all of them from the video, seem uneducated?

It is right, if we call them educated fools, right?

That was just one of the many incidents that enlighten you about the idiocy in the society. We are nowhere near to development, with all such narrow minds and objectifying opinions. Just economic development cannot fuel India.

You could understand on a large scale, how sex education acts as a foundation to many societal actions and interferences. It is a precursor to healthy relationships, which is rare in today’s world.

Not just educational institutions, Indian households are also responsible for imparting sex education. Because family is more compact than a school. Such conversations could be hard at the beginning, but they are worth it. I don’t know what is stopping us from having a conversation at the least. We need not wait for politicians to start talking about it.

Sex education strengthens the ability of young people to make conscious, satisfying, healthy and respectful choices regarding relationships, emotional and physical health. It is not encouraging young people to have sex.

Absolutely not. It evens out the power dynamics in intimate relationships, thus contributing to the prevention of abuse and fostering mutually respectful and consensual partnerships.
