Sustainable Development Goals: Andhra Pradesh ranks 3 in Niti Aayog’s SDG Index

Niti Aayog’s list of the Sustainable Development Goals have come out and Andhra Pradesh has significantly improved its status by increasing 5 points than last year with a total increase from 67 last time to 72 points in 2020-21.

Andhra Pradesh ranked in the top three states in India’s Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDG). Andhra Pradesh has improved its status and has become a leader in clean energy sector in India.

Dr. Rajiv Kumar whole announcing the third edition of the Sustainable Development Goals index has said that the index has been comprehensively documenting and ranking the progress made by states and union territories.

Niti Aayog vice-chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar while releasing the third edition of SDG India Index and dashboard said that the index has been comprehensively documenting and ranked the progress made by states and union territories towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

He said, “the index has become the primary tool for monitoring progress on the SDGs in the country and simultaneously it has fostered competition among states and Union Territories.”

The statement is clearly displaying the capitalist thinking, which is realistic and necessary for the economic growth, that with the healthy competition comes the motivation to do better.

Speaking about the topper of the tables, Kerala stood first with 75 points, which was followed by Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by 74 points. With 72 points, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Karnataka stood at number 3.
About 13 states were ranged in the category with a score between 50-64. And No state scored over 75.

Andhra Pradesh went up from 60 points to 81 in the poverty alleviation which is first of the Sustainable Development Goals. This is to be considered as a success of the government and the state as in the whole country because of Covid-19 pandemic there has been a loss of jobs and increase in poverty.

An economics professor at Acharya Nagarjuna University said, “The sustained focus on welfare of the poor helped the state beat all odds in the poverty alleviation. It is not an ordinary achievement in the situation,” Acharya Nagarjuna University.

Andhra Pradesh has also gone up in the target’s score to make zero hunger state. In this too there has been a 5 points increase which is quite well growth. Also, the health sector score went from 74 to 77 and it stood 7th in the health and well-being index.

We hope that Andhra Pradesh improves a lot in future and other states across the country also take this performance as a role model for achieving higher growth in their state’s Sustainable Development Goals.
