2021 is the year in the books for the horror genre. Netflix is hitting strong with all its new horror and thriller shows this year, starting with ‘Surviving Death’ (2021). And now the latest release is “There’s Someone Inside your House”. The 90-minute movie came out on 6th of October on Netflix got us hooked to it within the first hours. So, should you watch it or skip it? Let’s find out.
The movie starts with a high school jock getting murdered at his house. The murderer planted breadcrumbs of photographs of him beating another player, who is homosexual. After following the trail, the victim reaches his parents’ walk-in closet, where he was stabbed to death by a person wearing a mask of his victim’s face. Fast forward to the same night’s football game. The killer releases all the secrets the victim was hiding. And that’s the beginning of a new serial killer in the town.
The story mainly focuses on one girl named Makani Young, played by an American actress and comedian, Sydney Park. She was introduced as a normal transfer student who seems to hide some kind of dark past. After a few attacks, the signature of the killer was identified. The motivating factor behind all the killings were secrets. High school students are being killed and later their secrets were circulated.
There goes the main plot of the story. Although this seems to be pretty simple, it’s not. The main work of wonders has to be the plot twists. You would never imagine the way the writers have ended the movie.
The movie had a lot of symbolic meaning too. It brings out today’s “cancel” culture. The secrets are small mistakes which every human makes. Some try to forget and move forward, whereas some try to learn from them. The important thing was forgiveness. It’s a difficult but necessary step. We need to remember everyone is a human being and mistakes can happen. This was shown beautifully in the movie.
Although the story tried to focus on the present-day problems, it also gave us an 80s and early 2000s vibe. Just like other movies with teenagers and high schoolers, it also focuses on friendships and the lengths we go from them. You will get a lot of similarities from the ‘Fear Street’ trilogy (2021) and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ (1997).
Another disturbing but effective point which was brought up with the story was ignorance. We might think we know the person right Infront of us, but sometimes it’s far from what meets the eye. Humans are the most complex beings on this planet. Even if you think you know everything about the other person, there is so much more in the shadows. You don’t know what he or she is going through or what’s going on inside their head. And the most dangerous thing, you never know when the person is going to snap and give up.
The title of the movie alone gives us chills. Although it doesn’t explain much about the plot, or has any real importance except one small part in the movie. There’s someone inside your house. If that will not scare you to death, the writers gave us a serial killer to follow in the story.
The movie is directed by Patrick Brice, who’s famous works are Creep (2014) and Creep 2 (2017). So, following his earlier works, it was expected that the new release will be just as good as them. And we were right. If we have to choose one best thing about the movie, it has to be the eerie and creepy atmosphere throughout and of course the plot twist which the producer is well known for.
There’s Someone Inside your House was kept slim and straightforward by the director. It gets on with the main story right from the start without wasting time on introducing any characters. You get enough violence and blood throughout the movie, and let’s just say it did not feel shy showing the horrific scenes in the movie.
Along with Patrick Brice, another big shot of the horror genre was also actively present behind the movie. We mean none other than James Wan. Wan was a producer for the movie, working with Netflix and Shawn Levy. So naturally you understand this movie was a high-profile case behind it. The actors too did a really great job, especially Sydney Park.
The movie is short, effective and gave us goosebumps throughout the movie. So now you know what you are watching next time you crave for some horrific thrillers. If you are a fan of the horror genre, check out our articles on “Fear Street” trilogy and “Open your Eyes” on Crunch Stories.
