At a time when people are even doubting the World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccines and are hesitant to take them, thousands of people are rooting on herbal medicine that claims to cure the novel coronavirus.
As India is fighting the second wave of the COVID-19 virus, Bonigi Anandaiah, who refers to himself as an Ayurvedic practitioner, made a herbal medicine and eye drops that reportedly cures coronavirus for free. As the news broke, thousands of people gathered at his place, Krishnapatnam village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
Anandiah has been offering treatment and said that the “Rush of people to get the medicine has been increasing day by day and till date, we have distributed the medicine to over 20,000 people.” He further added, “Medicinal herbs are used in the preparation of the medicine. The treatment we offer will prevent as well as cure the virus. I have been distributing the medicine for almost a month now. My son had given me Rs 1 lakh initially, and now people donate herbs and other useful items needed for the preparation to continue the distribution process.”
Meanwhile, a local MLA claimed that no side effects were seen after the consumption of the medicine and in a way, supported Anandiah and his friends distributing the vaccine. However, a team of officials was sent to Krishnapatnam comprising panchayat officer Dhanalakshmi, RDO A.Suvarnamma, Nellore rural DSP, and AYUSH doctors. They collected the samples and spoke to the people at the camp.
“Response from the public was so far positive. AYUSH doctors have collected the samples and inspected the ingredients used in the medicine’s preparation. A report will be submitted to the district collector soon after the examination, which will further be sent to the state government,” said Dhanalakshmi, and appealed to the people to follow all Covid protocols at the camp. The doctors who arrived there agreed that the ingredients used to prepare the eye drops were indeed harmful to the eyes in the long run.
Visuals show that thousands of people are gathering at the camp with no social distance posing themselves to a high risk of contracting the virus. After the research, it was found out that Bonigi Anandaiah is not a certified practitioner and the state government has ordered them to immediately stop distributing the medicines and further warned that the act should not be repeated as such medicines require a thoughtful examination, research, trials before making them available to the public.
As the news broke on social media, netizens lashed out and feared if this was a “miraculous medicine” or a “disaster”. Few mentioned this act of taking advantage of the vulnerable. However, for a more clear result, the report from the state government is awaited.
