Pride Month1

Have you seen rainbow flags, rainbow-coloured logos and icons on various TV channels, mobile applications and social media accounts, particularly during the month of June? This indicates some celebratory events around the world. Read the article till the end to know more about this celebration and how you can be a part of it.

What is Pride Month?

The month of June is observed as the Pride Month across the world commemorating the Stonewall Uprising in June 1969 and the first ever pride parade of its kind which was organised on June 28, 1970.

Greenwich Village’s The Stonewall Inn, a popular bar for gay people, was raided by the police which spared the Stonewall Riots. In 2015, it became a milestone for the LGBTQ community and in 2016, President Barack Obama declared it a national monument.

The parade, held at the popular Central Park of New York, marked the beginning of a revolutionary movement that demanded gay rights and promoted the LGBT community as a dignified social group.

It is also known as the month of educating and creating awareness about ‘LOVE FOR ALL’ among the masses worldwide and promoting a healthy living environment in the society for members of each kind.
June 2021 marks the 51st anniversary of this parade. Global Pride day, just like every year, will be celebrated on June 28.

What is Pride and Pride symbol?

Pride, in opposition to be meant as shame or disdainful behaviour, throws light on celebrating the culture of LGBT community and reinforces equality and self-affirmation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT or GLBT, variants may include LGBTQ, LGBTI, LGBTQIA+ etc).

The rainbow flag symbolises the LGBTQ pride which was created by artist Gilbert Baker in the year 1978. Today, there are several flags of the community of specific identities, sexual characteristics and other expressions, each represented by different sets of colours.

The colours signify the following:

There are several variations of this flag. This rainbow flag 🏳‍🌈 is used in the pride parade, concerts and marches to champion the community.

How can you be a part of this celebration?

The pride parades and other celebrations were cancelled in 2020 and in 2021 as well due to the pandemic in many countries. So this year, you can participate and celebrate Pride Month virtually.

The theme for this year’s Pride Month is “The Fight Continues.” You can attend virtual events, concerts and awareness campaigns of the LGBTQ community. You can join or form a community to educate the surrounding people about the same. You can donate and contribute your part in organisations working for gay rights.

Let us hope for a world full of love and lovers of all kind and gear up for the Pride Month celebrations by waving 🏳‍🌈 virtually!
