Once in a lifetime, we all have dreamt or at least heard someone of planning to live on lunar planets or a trip over there. And many of us got a strong conviction regarding this desire when we heard that late actor Sushant Singh Rajput owns a land on moon called the Mare Moscoviense or the Sea of Muscovy.
But what’s the reality, Can you really buy the land on the moon, and if yes, then what is the procedure? Well, Point – Blank, the answer is no! Now, most of you must wonder that then how come sushant can buy the land on moon? So let’s start with the history which has all the answers of yours.
On 27th January 1967, The Soviet Union, The United States and United Kingdom met and set a Treaty on principles governing the activities of states in the exploration & use of outer space, including the moon & other celestial bodies and that treaty is called Outer Space Treaty (OST) which is also the kernel of International Space Law.
This treaty was signed up by 109 countries including India and came into effect on 10th October 1967. As stated in this treaty, ‘Outer Space is not subject to national sovereignty, through use or occupation or by any other means’. That’s why no country can ever exercise its rights on any outer space element for their business purpose.
The outer space is for everyone and is present for every humankind. But the main loophole which this treaty holds is that there is no mention of Private ownership. And due to this many agencies allegedly claim to sell the land on the moon.
But do you know even if you own a piece of land on earth, look carefully at the ‘abstract of title’ you have received during the time of purchase? You will discover that the land you own, at one time or another, was claimed as a sovereign territory by your respective nations. So every piece of land you own on this earth must be passed by the sovereign to you.
So you couldn’t claim your ownership until your sovereign territory or nation owns that land legally. No individual can purchase the land and settle their ownership there. However, there are few private agencies like the lunar registry who purportedly sell the land on the moon and many famous celebrities have got deceived by them.
If you think you can fly up to moon and settle a home over there, then kindly keep the note of the irregular temperature on moon (100°C to – 173°C), presence of low gravity i.e. 15% of total earth’s gravity and above all that harsh dust of the moon. Only trained astronauts who have received proper training can survive there for a specific period.
