It is so shocking that a week before everyone was searching for plasma donors to treat COVID-19 patients but it was in dearth and now it has been dropped from the COVID-19 clinical management guidelines.
For this, we need to understand why plasma therapy was used after all. Plasma therapy dates back to 100 years during the MERS and SARS which was proven very effective.
The revised guidelines were issued jointly by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) says that plasma therapy on COVID patients is not effective in reducing the progression to severe disease and death. It was an experiment that involved giving the plasma of COVID recovered person to a patient to cure. Studies have shown the ineffective and inappropriate use of it.
The decision to remove it came from the writings of the Principal Scientific advisor who cautioned against the irrational and non-scientific use of plasma therapy in the country. Studies conducted in China, USA the ineffectiveness of Plasma therapy. Scientists suggest that the erratic and irrational use of the have contributed to the development of the second wave of COVID-19 and its variants.
With plasma therapy being removed, what will happen to the plasma banks set up across the country, and most importantly what will come in place of plasma therapy as a treatment?
Governments urging people to donate plasma to treat the COVID-19 patients have been trashed in just a single statement. Governments, now are also accountable to the people for all the plasma they have. Many people are also questioning the government in social media that how can they so irresponsibly approve the plasma treatment without any proper research while countries like the USA and UK have stopped the plasma treatment, for COVID-19 patients, long back.
