The Union Ministry passed new rules regarding getting a driver’s license. Earlier, there were long-standing queues at the centre and every time we had to pass a driving test before getting a driver’s license. Painful and tiresome, isn’t it?

Well, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has brought new rules wherein driving license applicants can now get their license without a gest or with no hectic and tiresome application process at Regional Transport Office (RTO). This will come to effect from July 1st, 2021.

This doesn’t say that you don’t need to show your driving skills while getting a test. The applicants have to undergo a special training at any accredited driving centres. There will be a registration for the license at any driving school where they have to qualify to get one, after which is successfully passed, there isn’t any need to go to the Regional Transport Office (RTO)

Stimulators and various equipment will be there in these training centres like dedicated driving test track for high-quality training to the applicants. The driving course for a light motor vehicle in an allowed driver training centre will run for 29 hours in four weeks, maximum from starting of the course, according to the notification. The applicants will not only be required to learn the theory but also to practice it before getting a license.

The duration for medium and heavy motor vehicle driving courses in the training centres is 38 hours in six weeks.

Since in the past we have observed several incidents where the drivers have forgotten about the ethical manners one should have on the road which includes their behaviour at traffic signals and everywhere while driving.

This unethical behaviour has caused a lot of chaos sometimes ending up in fights, so to combat these the training school will include teachings regarding the ethics and courteous behaviour while on the road.

From light, heavy vehicles there will also be industry specific special training. There are a lot of unskilled drivers on the road which is a dangerous thing so this course will help combat that and fulfill the shortage of skilled drivers. The accreditation will be of 5 years subject to renewal.

On a larger note, this is a great step by the government to make the drivers he skilled properly with the vehicle and also be taught regarding the ethics. We know a lot of accidents, issues, and chaos that happen on the road is because of ignorance and no stringent regulations. In the light of these issues, the new regulation is certainly very helpful for better knowledge and safety on the road.
